The goal of this compendium is to be a reliable reference when building characters in a serious production pipeline.

What These Guides Are

  • Good practices to achieve important features with characters.
  • Information on the fundamentals of building characters, so you can expand on your knowledge.

What These Guides Are NOT

  • Modeling/rigging/animating a Character.
  • How to use automated tools like Metahuman.
  • An exhaustive documentation of all Unreal features.

What About Features Not Covered Here?

The bulk of this compendium is devoted to implementing the basics correctly with good practices. There are a lot of hurdles in the way of getting the basics done right.

There are more Unreal features and techniques not covered here that may be useful for your project. Their absense doesn’t mean I don’t approve of them, but it does mean if you’re unsure, you probably don’t need them.

The compendium may be expanded in the future, especially as I run into more challenges with my own characters.
